Robert Hugh Ferguson III passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2026 in Indianapolis, Indiana, after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. He was born Sept. 13, 1958, in Bowling Green, Ohio, to Robert H. Ferguson Jr. (deceased) and JoAnne E. Ferguson (Daffron).

Bob, affectionately known as “Fergy”, lived a life defined by intelligence, humor, and quiet compassion. He studied Computer Science at Purdue University and built a long, successful career in information technology and computer programming, serving in both state and federal government as well as the private sector. His colleagues admired his sharp mind, quick wit, and his ability to teach and mentor others.

A lifelong animal lover, Bob never married but found deep joy in raising several beloved dogs — his “fur babies.” He was close to his mother JoAnne and his stepmother Deanie Ferguson, and shared a special bond with his siblings Tammy Smith (Jim) and Jim Ferguson (Teresa). He is also survived by his nephews Nevin (Mary) and Charles, and niece Erica, and a host of family and friends who loved him as their own.

Bob loved music, especially his favorite band Pink Floyd, whose lyrics and soundtracks often mirrored his thoughtful, introspective nature. True to form, Bob faced brain cancer the same way he lived life — with stubborn optimism, quick wit, and an unbreakable spirit. He continued to work until he could no longer, strengthened by regular visits from his best friends and work buddies who kept his spirits high.

Bob chose cremation and requested no formal funeral service. The family will hold a celebration of life in the coming months and will send notifications in advance to friends and loved ones who wish to honor his memory and yes, there will be tater tots. 

Bob’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the teams at Westminster Village North Skilled Nursing Facility and Community North Hospice for their compassionate care and respect during his final months. We are thankful for all the seen and unseen support throughout this difficult journey, especially from his best buds Roger and Len and his neighbor Andy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Glioblastoma Foundation or to the Marion County Humane Society in Bob’s name.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him — a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend whose kindness, laughter, and positivity left a lasting mark.  Rest in peace, Fergy. Your spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
