Frank J. Pope

Frank J. Pope

Frank J. Pope, 76, of Indianapolis passed away on February 6, 2025. Frank was born on March 8, 1948 to Frank Ballard Pope and Kathryn Quinn Pope. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Candice Hines Pope, his daughters Mary Victoria (Vicki) Pope and Theresa Lynn (Terri) Pope, and grandson Joseph Matthew Pope. He is also survived by his in-laws Sharon and Dick Mattson, their daughters Courtney (Tom) Davis and Taylor Mattson, and their grandchildren Lexie, Corbin and Payton Davis.

Frank was born and spent his young childhood in Lawrence County, Indiana, which included several years exploring Spring Mill State Park while Kathryn was manager of the inn. After the family moved to Indianapolis, he was a member of the first graduating class at Brebeuf Jesuit High School in 1966. He then attended Purdue University, where he was a photographer for the student newspaper, The Purdue Exponent, and a member of Kappa Delta Rho fraternity, graduating in 1970. After Purdue, he attended IU McKinney School of Law, graduating in 1973 and passing the bar in 1974. Along the way, he also served his country in the Air Force Reserves. Frank began his law career as a bailiff and clerk for Federal Judge Cale J. Holder, joined the Office of the Marion County Prosecutor under Stephen Goldsmith from 1979 to 1986, and was in private practice for the remaining part of his career.

Frank was known for his love of motor racing. He attended nearly every Indianapolis 500 until his seats were removed as part of an Indianapolis Motor Speedway renovation. He was a member of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), running rallies with J.M. Grady, his lifelong friend since high school. Brent Cary and Micheal McGraw. He also competed in solos and rallies with the local SCCA Indy chapter. Later, he participated in Glock shooting competitions. Frank also enjoyed watching the Indianapolis Colts and his Purdue teams on television. Additionally, he amassed an impressive elephant collection throughout his life.

Frank was very charming and could command a room with his story-telling. He could be incredibly generous, opening his home to people who were down on their luck multiple times, and opening his heart to many orphaned or abandoned pets over the years. Frank also enjoyed cooking delicious meals for family and friends on holidays and other special occasions. Although many of his closest friends preceded him in death, his spirit will be missed by his surviving friends and family.

A Memorial – Celebration of LIFE will be held at a later date.

Arrangements entrusted to Simple Cremation Indianapolis, 6904 S. East Street, Suite E, Indianapolis, IN.
